    • Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur has become the first engineering college in India to start a text and audio service related to Hindu sacred texts. The services are being offered on the official portal of the premier college which displays the link http://www.gitasupersite.iitk.ac.in.Srimad Bhagwadgita, Ramcharitmanas, Brahma Sutra, Yoga Sutra, Shri Ram Mangal Dasji and the Narada Bhakti Sutra are among the nine sacred texts uploaded.

  • 6.1 magnitude quake rattles Afghanistan; girl killed in Pakistan’s Quetta town
  • A 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck northern Afghanistan on Wednesday 31st January 2018 and tremors were felt as far India and Pakistan, where one girl was killed and 11 people were injured
      • The quake hit at 12:37 IST near Afghanistan’s northern border with Tajikistan in the Hindu Kush mountains at a depth of 191 km, the US Geological Survey said.
      • Mild tremors were also felt in New Delhi and Jammu and Kashmir.
  • Subramanian Swamy moves private bill seeking death for cow slaughter
      • BJP MP Subramanian Swamy moved in the Rajya Sabha Friday a Private Members’ Bill that seeks death penalty for cow slaughter but withdrew it after a lively debate and with the warning that he will bring the proposed legislation again if the NDA government did not act on it.
      • Swamy moved for consideration and passing the Cow Protection Bill, 2017 aimed at creating an authority to ensure stabilisation of population of cows, ban their slaughter and provide deterrent punishment, including death penalty for the crime

    • Cochin University beef row: Kuttanad Engineering campus shut down indefinitely
      • With tension rising at the Cochin University College of Engineering Kuttanad (CUCEK) campus over the “beef row”, authorities have decided to indefinitely close the campus
      • North Indian students have alleged that they were forcibly fed beef and were assaulted in the campus when they tried to protest
      • The decision to close down CUCEK was taken after talks between the Cusat authorities and striking North Indian students failed on Wednesday. Of the 3500 plus students at CUCEK, around 500 are North Indian students.
      • During the meeting, the VC said that an inquiry will be conducted and a report will be submitted within four days based on which action will be initiated. The students were also told that if they had missed any exam in the last few days, then the university would conduct the exam again and the exams would be conducted only after the inquiry is over.
      • However, the striking students didn’t agree to this and insisted that the college principal Sunil Kumar be immediately suspended for “hurting the religious sentiments of the north Indian students”. Cusat authorities rejected this demand and said that action will be initiated only after an inquiry is conducted into the issue
      • Tension started at the campus after a digital banking awareness camp conducted at the campus last Thursday. At the camp that was inaugurated by the principal, the organizers offered tea and cutlets. The North Indian students allege that they were fed “beef” in the name of vegetarian cutlets. On Monday, students protested at Cusat and the authorities promised to conduct an inquiry
      • The clash between two groups of students happened at the campus as the North Indian group, tried to disperse students from classrooms. This was opposed by the local students who are in majority at the campus.

  • Between 2013 and May 2017, 58 student suicides were reported at coaching centres in Kota.
  • The police records, however, give no information on attempted suicides.

  • Every year, approximately 1.5 to 2 lakh students come to Kota to realise their dream of getting into an engineering or medical college.

  • Self-harm, substance abuse, bullying, sexual experimentation and the possibility of pregnancy, sleep-related issues, loneliness, weight loss, acidity and anxiety are common among students in Kota, the coaching class capital of Rajasthan famous for offering preparatory courses to IIT hopefuls, a report by the Tata Institute of Social Sciences has said.

 

 

 

  • Man Gets Sucked Into MRI Machine At Mumbai Hospital, Killed

 

    • A 32-year-old man was sucked into an MRI machine and killed after he walked into the room carrying an oxygen cylinder at a Mumbai hospital. The shocking incident, which has raised serious questions over safety, occurred on Saturday evening when the victim was helping an elderly relative into the MRI room for a scan. The man’s relatives allege that a ward boy at the BYL Nair Charitable Hospital asked him to take the cylinder inside.

    • A 16-year-old boy was killed and at least two persons were injured in clashes that erupted on Friday after a mob attacked a Republic Day motorcycle rally on Mathura-Bareilly highway in Kasganj.
    • The police said some unidentified miscreants hurled stones at the motorcycle rally taken out by VHP (Vishwa Hindu Parishad) and ABVP (Akhil Bhartiya Vishwa Parishad) volunteers to celebrate the Republic Day.

    • ‘Bed Of Cash’: Nearly Rs. 100 Crore In Banned Notes At Kanpur Home

 

  • Banned notes worth crores, making up a “bed” of cash when stacked up, were found on Tuesday at a house in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur. The cash had to be stuffed into five big steel trunks, gunny bags and cartons by officials of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and the UP police.
  • Union state minister for Human Resource Development claims that Darwin’s Theory is scientifically wrong.

 

      • He said “Nobody, including our ancestors, in written or oral, have said they saw an ape turning into a man,”
      • “Darwin’s theory (of evolution of humans) is scientifically wrong. It needs to change in school and college curriculum. Since the man is seen on Earth he has always been a man,” he said while speaking to reporters on Friday in Aurangabad.
      • However, scientific community has slammed his claim. But he has refused to back off from his statement.
